This time we would not be interrupted. After about an hour across a dry, treeless plain, we dropped down into a shallow valley where we saw a couple thousand wildebeest. Our immediate disappointment was soon allayed as we approached a much larger herd. Here we were in the midst of several hundred thousand of the animals. They were joined by about 100 egrets and several hundred zebras. We found a shady spot somewhat out of the dust and wind where we had lunch while watching the animals mill around the small lake. Most interesting was the long line of the wildebeests coming over the hill and through the lake to join the rest of the herd. In a few days, these animals would be off to the Masai Mara where the water would be more plentiful and the grass would be greener.
On the long, slow drive back we came upon a family of lions resting in the shade of a tree. Two sisters and their six month-old kits were enjoying the shade. We also saw a family of hyenas. One of them was playing in the water. Felix said that is a rare behavior. We arrived back at camp about 3:30, plenty of time for a shower and a nap before dinner. I spent part of that time watching the love birds frolic in the nearby trees and a couple of weavers building nests.
